Statement by MP Zimmer Regarding U.S. Country of Origin Labeling Ruling

OTTAWA – Bob Zimmer, Member of Parliament for Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies, made the following statement regarding the World Trade Organization’s ruling on the U.S. Country of Origin Labeling provisions:

“It is encouraging to hear that the World Trade Organization has once again ruled against the blatantly protectionist Country of Origin Labeling provisions by the United States.

“I think that most people understand that mandatory Country of Origin Labels hurts everyone on both sides of the border. That is what I emphasized to Members of Congress and industry representatives in the United States when I travelled to Washington, DC in 2013 with members of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food to speak about the impacts of this policy.

“I will continue to stand up for Canadian farmers and families against these anti-trade mechanisms. I also call on the Minister of Agriculture to press his Cabinet to do what is in the best interest of Canadian farm families by enforcing retaliatory measures as soon as possible.”
