Standing Up To Liberals’ Unprecedented Attacks On Freedom of Speech
OTTAWA – Bob Zimmer, Member of Parliament for Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies, issued the following statement after the Liberals rammed Bill C-10 through the House without proper debate:
“Weeks ago, the Liberals withdrew the section of their own bill that protects individual users’ content, resulting in Canadians being made subject to broad and vague government powers to regulate their use of social media.
“Since then, my Conservative colleagues and I have fought daily to protect the freedom of speech of Canadians, while the Liberals have gone so far as to use extreme tactics not used in decades to silence the Opposition.
“While we were able to slow down the process, late last night in a series of votes the Liberals, with help from the NDP and Bloc Québécois, successfully rammed Bill C-10 through the House of Commons without proper debate.
“As one of the founders of the International Grand Committee, I have always stressed the importance of ensuring that our fundamental right to freedom of speech is protected online. I am deeply concerned that Bill C-10 leaves the door open for a massive abuse of power over the rights of Canadians.
“If this controversial bill is adopted, a Conservative government will repeal this deeply flawed legislation.
“I will always stand up for the freedoms of Canadians.”
